Wormwood is active against malaria, Staphylococcus aureus, Naegleria floweri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Klebsiella pneumoniae, intestinal worms, and amebic organisms. Infusions are used to treat sluggish digestion, poor appetite, and gastritis. They are also used to treat jaundice, hepatitis, fever, asthma, cough, kidney stones, stomach gas, menstrual cramps and menopausal complaints, intestinal parasites, sprains and bruises, arthritis, and hemorrhoids. Also active against various cancer cell lines. Broadly active against dermatophytes—fungi that cause infections in hair, skin, and nails. It does have a nasty flavour, though, and needs to be helped with a good dose of honey or ginger.
Ingredients: sweet wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). Liquid extract in 40%-54% distilled sugarcane alcohol and dried herbs/menstruum ratio 1:4; 100 ml made October 2020 with expiry date September 2025.
Direction: either taking 30-90 drops (1.5-5ml) of the tincture beneath the tongue and allowing it to enter the bloodstream sublingually or put 1tsp (5ml) in 250 ml hot/warm water and leave uncover for five minutes so the alcohol is evaporated, if it is undesirable for recovering alcoholics. It can be taken up to 6 times daily on empty stomach. It is very very bitter and suggest one puts it in hot water to make as tea, it may burn under the tongue if one puts full dose; start with drops and gradually increase the drops, is fine, no burn. Stop taking after 1 week, then start again after 2 weeks.
- Avoid during pregnancy as it is a uterine stimulant and may cause fetal abnormalities. Avoid during breastfeeding as thujone can be passed to the baby.
- Those with bleeding problems should also avoid the herb as large doses can be toxic.
Benefits: Artemisia absinthium is primarily antiparasitics for the blood and liver and antitumor agents. The traditional use of Artemisia, which gives a very good indication of its range of medicinal activity, has been primarily:
• For reducing fever—the plant stimulates sweating • For topical use—it’s useful for infected wounds and skin infections • For gastrointestinal tract problems and infections • For female reproductive problems—primarily as an emmenagogue • For liver problems • For parasitic diseases of the blood and liver
